Charleston, South Carolina

Small-batch fragrance drawn from the Lowcountry — walled gardens, barrier islands, and the hour before a storm. Hand-blended by one person, a few dozen bottles at a time.

The house

Wrought iron, and everything growing through it.

Charleston is a city of made things slowly losing an argument with the plants. A gate someone hammered by hand in 1840, and the moss that has been quietly taking it back ever since.

Every fragrance here starts from a real place you could walk to — a shaded alley, a tidal creek at the top of the water, a piazza at six in the evening. Sweetgrass runs through all of them, so faint you feel it rather than name it.

How it's made

Blended by hand in Charleston in batches small enough to count. Crafted with natural essences alongside modern perfumery materials — the combination is what gives these their lift and staying power.

Each batch rests two weeks minimum before it's poured. Nothing ships before it's finished settling.

Made here

One pair of hands

Formulated, blended, filled and labeled in Charleston. No white-label supplier, no borrowed scent library.

Made slowly

Two weeks to settle

Every batch macerates before it's judged, then again before it's bottled. It's the unglamorous part that decides whether a fragrance is any good.

Made small

Batches, not runs

Bottles are numbered by batch. When a batch is gone, the next one is mixed — and it will be very slightly its own thing.

Not sure where to start

Try five before you commit.

The discovery set is five 2 ml sprays — enough for a proper day of wear each, which is the only honest way to judge a fragrance. The cost comes off your first full bottle.

Discovery set

Five 2 ml sprays — $34

Meeting Street, Edisto, King Tide, Four O'Clock and Magnolia Hour. Credited in full toward your first 50 ml bottle.

Reading the notes

Notes are listed the way they arrive: the top is the first ten minutes, the heart is the next few hours, the base is what's still there at the end of the day.

These are crafted with natural essences alongside modern perfumery materials. Full ingredient lists ship with every bottle.

Story

It started with a walk.

Go far enough down almost any street south of Broad and you'll pass a gate — hand-forged iron, scrolled and spiked, framing a garden that isn't yours to enter. Look up and there's a live oak leaning over the whole thing with moss hanging off it, indifferent to the ironwork entirely.

That's the whole idea. Something made with enormous care, and something wild slowly having its way with it. Gate and moss.

How it began

Gate & Moss started at a kitchen table with a set of pipettes, a notebook, and no perfumery experience whatsoever. The first blend was bad. The fourth was interesting. Somewhere around the fifteenth, one of them stopped smelling like an experiment and started smelling like a place.

Everything here is still made that way — one person, small batches, a lot of blotter strips. Formulas get revised one variable at a time, which is slow and occasionally maddening and the only way to actually learn what a material does.

Sweetgrass

One material appears in all six fragrances, always in a trace so small it never announces itself: sweetgrass. It's the same grass coiled into baskets on the corner of Meeting and Broad, a craft carried here from West Africa and held onto for three hundred years by Gullah Geechee families.

In a bottle it reads as something like warm hay and vanilla and cut field — familiar in a way you can't quite place. It's the thread that makes these smell like a house rather than a set of unrelated ideas.

What we won't say

These aren't all-natural, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Some of the most beautiful materials in modern perfumery came out of a lab, and a few of them are what let a natural jasmine or osmanthus actually project instead of dying on your wrist in an hour.

What's true: crafted with natural essences, hand-blended in Charleston, in batches small enough that we can tell you which one your bottle came from.
